Norfolk Southern Railroad Tower & Track Tour
The John W. Whitaker Terminal in Austell, GA is one of the largest intermodal facilities east of the Mississippi River. The 7 million square foot facility handles between 380,000 and 550,000 units per year. This tour will begin with networking and lunch at the City of Austell Threadmill Complex in Austell (located at 5000 Austell-Powder Springs Road, Austell, Georgia) and move by chartered bus to the terminal in Austell. Once on site, the group will split. One group will tour the facility by bus, viewing activity along the tracks and the operation of the gantry crane systems as they shift containers and trailers from rail to truck and back. The other group will tour the command and control facilities in the tower. There they will see the planning and scheduling activities as they happen. Bus will return participants to the Threadmill Complex after the tour’s completion.
